Whether you love or hate the winter season, one certainty is that the winter weather is completely unpredictable here in the UK. Sunshine in the morning, snow blizzards in the evening, you really can experience four seasons in one day so it’s no wonder us Brits are obsessed with our weather.
Our extreme range of weather can make travelling difficult, especially when icy conditions and falling snow can make roads treacherous and difficult to pass. Every year the news headlines report of cars getting stuck on major roads, with people stranded in their vehicles. If you are travelling regularly it’s advisable to have a winter essential pack in your car, you just never know when you may need it. The RAC has put together a winter breakdown checklist which could help if you do get stranded. Choosing a car that can handle the UK’s changing weather conditions can help. Where you live, the type of roads you drive on and your budget will also influence your car choice. For many of us getting a standard hatchback with winter tyres will probably be enough (read this article for more information: (https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/motoring-issues/winter-tyres-uk-snow-guide/) but if you’re looking for something a little bit special and have a large budget here’s some of the most luxurious SUV’s on the market this winter.
Range Rover Sport
The Range Rover Sport is a hugely capable SUV. It’s practical, luxurious and spacious. Now in its second generation the sport has the same aluminium construction as the Range Rover making it lighter and more agile. There’s also a comprehensive choice of engines including a plug-in hybrid. It’s sophisticated suspension set-up is perfect for both on road and off road and with the Terrain Response 2 system it can automatically select the correct driving mode for the conditions.
Jaguar are famously known for designing and building sleek, high-performance sports cars. Compared to many car manufacturers Jaguar were slow to enter the SUV market as it wasn’t until 2015 when they launched their first SUV, the F-Pace. The F-Pace is as you expect, a premium luxury SUV that not only looks good but can handle icy and wintry conditions with its optional adaptive surface response system which will automatically adjust the power between all four wheels for maximum grip.
Mercedes G- Class
The Mercedes G-Class is iconic. Its hard utilitarian form was designed to be practical and simple but as a result became something of a showstopper. Now redesigned it’s an altogether more accomplished, competent and comfortable drive. The nine-speed automatic gear box can be left to sort itself out or the driver can control the gears with the metal paddles behind the steering wheel. It’s a more than capable off roader than can pretty much handle any terrain and any weather condition you throw at it. Mercedes have also muted that an electric version could be on the horizon so its worth keeping in touch with your local Mercedes dealer for any breaking news.
